SV: wood gasifers

A large fleet of cars and I believe also trucks and buses were run on gengas i.e. wood gas in Sweden during world war 2. Ask Volvo or Scania what the size or the biggest units were.
Best regards Sten Maartmann

>Does anyone have knowledge of a wood gasifier large enough to run a 150
>hp internal combustion engine?
>In about 1979-1980 there appeared on the National News with Dan Rather a
>fellow who had installed a wood gasification unit in a 1970's Chevy
>station wagon and, starting in Jacksonville Fla, went across Interstate
>10 to the Pacific Ocean. Every evening tere was a shot of him pulling
>into a construction site or lumber yard and filling up with small pieces
>of wood. He had remved the gas tank from the vehicle and was using the
>area for his wood pile. The gasification unit was installed on a small
>two wheel trailer with a hose to conduct the gas up to the carbuerator
>on the engine.
>There was a short TV segment each evening showing his progress and of
>him answering questions of interested reporters and bystanders. I cut
>an article out of the Savannah, Ga newspaper about the beginning of the
>trip at the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville Beach. The article had
>pictures of the people and the vehicle. I have intended to build one
>for several years. Now that I am retired I may have time. I don't know
>what the EPA would have to say about it, and I would imagine the Feds
>would raise cain about not collecting taxes on the fuel. I have found
>plans over the years for small units, probably 5-10 hp.
>While studying up on this subject I found it is a very old technology.
>The Germans ran everything from farm tractors and military trucks to
>locomotives and freight carying ships used on the large rivers. They
>have operated all types of veicles and stationary plants in Africa since
>the eaely 1900's. I believe they still use some on fishing boats in the
>Phillipines. When the World Fair was in Knoxville Tennessee in about
>1982-1983 the Phillipine Exhibition had one in a boat about l2-15 feet
>long like their fishing boats "back home". Normally they would give
>demonstrations every day but, as my luck would have it, they were closed
>that day and I could only view it from a bridge over the lake. The
>gasifier tank looked about like a 50 lb Freon tank and the engine was
>probably 5 hp Briggs and Stratton.
>Is anyone interested in these things or am I the only "Kook" around. I
>still have the article on the car in my "Projects to be done later"
>book.
